The Toledo community is a very vast and diverse group. Toledo has a very large Muslim population for a metropolis of 300,000. We are an open and very welcoming group. There are over 10,000 Muslims living in Northwest Ohio.
The vast majority of Muslims in Northwest Ohio are professionals, business owners, and are highly educated with access to a lot of resources.
Toledo is strategically located 1 hour south of Detroit, 1.5 hours west of Cleveland, 2 hours north of Columbus, 4 hours east of Chicago, 1.5 hours north of Dayton, 30 minutes south of Ann Arbor, 3 hours north of Cincinnati, and 2 hours from East Lansing. Right smack dab in the middle of the Midwest.
The iconic Islamic Center of Greater Toledo located off of I-75 is perhaps the most beautiful and the largest Masjid in the entire United States. Masjid Saad Foundation, or MSF, is located on Alexis Road west of Whiteford Road. Toledo Islamic Academy is on the campus of Masjid Saad and is the first K-12 full time Islamic School in the State of Ohio. The Muslims Students' Association is located on the campus of the University of Toledo is one of the most active groups on campus. All of these organizations and many more make up the Toledo community.
The city of Toledo itself has a rich history colored with Muslims and Arabs in the background. Many of the city buildings, streets, and museums have Arabic names. The first Arab American Mayor in the United States was Toledo's Mike Damas when he was elected in 1959. Toledo is home to the first Arab American cabinet member, when President George W. Bush placed Spencer Abraham on his cabinet in the year 2000.
