If you were concerned about giving donations this Ramadan and holiday season, have no fear. Here is a look at what one Muslim charity organization is doing to fight back.
On November 15, Global Relief Foundation (GRF) filed a civil lawsuit against
ABC News, the Associated Press and several newspapers, including The New
York Times, Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Daily
News, seeking damages for statements made about the charity in a series of
news items following the tragic attacks on September 11th. The lawsuit
seeks $25 million in compensatory damages, and $100 million in punitive
damages. For more details, please review GRF’s complaint, which was filed
in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
GRF continues to deny that it is part of any fundraising network that
supports terrorists, or that it is in any way associated with bin Laden,
al Qaeda, Hamas or any other terrorist group. Despite the negative
publicity that it has received, GRF is continuing to provide humanitarian
aid to people in need in areas throughout the world. Indeed, while the
U.S. government has moved quickly to freeze the assets of those suspected
of supporting terrorist operations in the wake of the September 11, 2001
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, GRF has not been among
the organizations targeted by federal authorities. Moreover, GRF has no
knowledge that its activities are the subject of any active federal
investigation.
GRF’s staff makes every reasonable effort to ensure that the humanitarian
aid that GRF provides to some of the most distressed areas of the world is
not used in support of terrorist activities. GRF will make every effort
possible to update donors and the public on this lawsuit. In the meantime,
GRF continues to work seven days a week throughout the year in bringing
relief to those who need it most, the singular and defining means of its
existence.
